Celebrating Earth Day with Italy–Taiwan scientific cooperation for biodiversity protection
On April 20–21, the CNR Research Area in Pisa hosted the bilateral CNR (Italy)–NSTC (Taiwan) conference, dedicated to the conservation and restoration of ecosystem services for the promotion of biodiversity. The event was organized within the framework of the Italy–Taiwan collaborative project “Conservation and Restoration of Ecosystem Services for Promoting Biodiversity: A Critical Zone Perspective to Compare Italy and Taiwan Mountain Study Sites”, which focuses on the study of mountain ecosystems and biodiversity conservation.
The project aims to establish a long-term partnership to investigate the evolutionary dynamics of mountain ecosystems in Europe and Asia. These ecosystems are subject to external pressures of varying intensity, both anthropogenic and climate-related. A key objective is to assess how local communities are adapting to climate change and to identify innovative mitigation strategies to enhance their resilience, with particular emphasis on biodiversity protection.
The event was organized by Andrea Scartazza (CNR-IRET), Maddalena Pennisi (CNR-IGG), Ilaria Baneschi (CNR-IGG), Gianna Vivaldo (CNR-IGG), and Lisa Sella (CNR-IRCrES).
The Taiwanese participants included:
- Dr. Herlin Chien, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (Taiwan);
- Prof. (River) Jr-Chuan Huang, Department of Geography, National Taiwan University (Taiwan);
- Dr. Chung-I Chen, Department of Forestry, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (Taiwan).
