From Havighurst to Guillemard: Writing ageing across the long duration of discourses and policies

Abstract
This chapter examines how two seminal texts by Robert J. Havighurst and Anne‑Marie Guillemard contribute to shaping contemporary understandings of ageing by constructing, rather than merely describing, the category of old age. Through a linguistic and discursive analysis, it highlights how Havighurst’s formulation of successful aging establishes a normative framework centred on continuity,
productivity and individual responsibility, while offering operational tools that translate subjective experience into measurable indicators. It then retraces how Guillemard’s reconstruction of the French politics of ageing reveals the emergence of a new public discourse that reframes older people as autonomous and active citizens yet simultaneously produces renewed inequalities and moral expectations. The comparative reading shows how micro‑level psychological models and macro‑level institutional analyses converge in generating powerful regimes of truth that organise the governance of ageing over time. The chapter calls for renewed critical awareness of the historical and political foundations of these narratives.
