Visit to Alta Murgia – a case study of the MONALISA project
On April 22 – 24, the Taiwanese delegation visited Alta Murgia in Puglia as part of the bilateral CNR (Italy)–NSTC (Taiwan) project. Alta Murgia is one of the case study areas of the MONALISA project (MONitoring and Assessing Prevention and Restore solutions to combat desertification).
On April 22nd the CNR and the Taiwan teams presented their research activities to strenghen their collaboration patterns.
April 23rd was dedicated to the social sciences: The group retraced the history of the landscape, the main territorial challenges and the creation of the Alta Murgia National Park thanks to Piero Castoro, “Torre di Nebbia” cultural association. In the afternoon, the group discovered how grazing and cheesemaking are organized in Alta Murgia at “Masseria Scalera“. Finally, they visited the “Museo sull’Uomo di Altamura“, which houses the full remains of a Homo Neanderthalensis found in the area.
On April 24th, the focus shifted to the natural sciences: they visited Clara, the Eddy covariance tower in PNAM, managed by CNR-IIA, a key instrument for measuring carbon exchanges between ecosystems and the atmosphere. The group also learned about fire risks in the Murgia region with ARIF Puglia, and visited restoration sites where Nature-based Solutions have been implemented.
The two days were organized by CNR-IIA, Lisa Sella, Francesca Silvia Rota and Elena Ragazzi participated for CNR-IRCrES.
