Abstract

This paper deals with Francophone literary works written in ex Sub-Saharan colonies.

It starts exploring the theme of auto-translation. In particular, it discusses the difficulties authors from these areas had when it came to express their own sensibility and imaginary creations with a language imposed by the colonizer and the solutions they experimented with.

Then, the paper examines the issue of translating such works into the Italian language. It analyses the challenges a translator may have to face: multilingualism, the relation between power and languages, the “otherness” and how to render it, linguistic variations, etc. It also offers both theoretical approaches and practical solutions to efficiently deal with these problems.

Finally, this paper examines the choices made by the publishers who decided to distribute said works in our country.

This is a very vast topic, which needs much more studies. New related areas of research, such as the productions by African migrants in Italy, are suggested.

Keywords: translation, linguistic variation, French around the world, français d’ailleurs, Sub-Saharan Africa, Francophone literature.
