Abstract

The lack of job-seeking by men until a few decades ago was considered a marginal phenomenon, given the clear prevalence of an active attitude toward the labour market within the male population. Consequently, while female inactivity has been the subject of in-depth studies and debates, male inactivity has remained relatively unexplored for a long time. This study aims to investigate the social and economic underpinnings of male inactivity, considering its significant quantitative dimension, which has become a focal point in the context of the social sustainability of current labour market dynamics. By analysing microdata from the Istat “Rilevazione delle Forze di Lavoro”, we estimate the effect of relevant economic variables – both proxies for contextual factors and individual characteristics – on the probability of being inactive. Comparing the results obtained from the estimations of these variables for the unemployed allows us to distinguish the characteristics of the two groups of individuals, facilitating the understanding of crucial aspects of each group’s condition. Finally, the differences between the inactive and the unemployed suggest specific policy interventions capable of addressing these issues effectively.
